Southern Grit Endurance Challenge

April 17 - 18, 2027
Parksville, KY 40440 US

Rucking Division

We’re excited to offer a Rucking Division for the 3-Hour, 6-Hour, 12-Hour, and 24-Hour events.

For those new to rucking, rucking involves walking or hiking while carrying weight in a rucksack, also known as a backpack. The term “rucking” comes from the military word rucksack.

Rucksack Requirement

To be eligible for the Ruck Division, all required weight must be carried in a rucksack/backpack.

Ruck Plate Carriers and weighted vests are NOT permitted for the Ruck Division. For Southern Grit, we consider a Ruck Plate Carrier to be the same as a weighted vest because it is designed primarily to carry weight rather than function as a traditional rucksack/backpack.

If you choose to wear a weighted vest or Ruck Plate Carrier, you may still participate, but you will be moved to the Run Division and will not be eligible for Ruck Division awards or podium placement.

Weight Requirements

Participants over 150 lb: 20 lb dry weight
Participants under 150 lb: 10 lb dry weight

“Dry weight” means the required weight does not include water, food, clothing, or other consumable items.

The required weight must consist of a steel ruck plate, weight blocks, bumper plates, or another non-consumable item with a clearly marked or verifiable weight and must remain inside the participant’s rucksack.

Weigh-In & Weight Checks

Weigh-ins will begin 60 minutes prior to the race start.

No weigh-in, no patch.

Participants may not remove or reduce their required weight at any time during the event.

Weight may be verified:

  • Before the race
  • At aid stations
  • Anywhere on the course through random spot checks
  • At the completion of your event or when you officially tap out

Participants must still have the required dry weight in their rucksack when their event ends.

We operate on the honor system, so please do the right thing and help us keep the Ruck Division fair for everyone.

Finisher Patch

Every Ruck Division participant who meets the rucking requirements will receive a Southern Grit Ruck Finisher Patch once their race is officially complete or they have officially tapped out.

Participants will also receive the other race swag included with their registration.
